HALLMARKS OF ALANYA-GAZIPAŞA REGION: DELIK DENIZ (ANTIOCHIA AD CRAGUM) AND KRAL KOYU (KING’S BAY)AURUS MOUNTAINS
THING TO SEE AND DO IN ALANYA FROM TREDVISOR: Delik Deniz (translated as ‘the Hole in the Sea’) and Kral Koyu (King’s Bay) are considered to be among the most interesting and mysterious bays of Turkey thanks to their natural formation and interesting visuality. Delik Deniz and Kral Bay are located next to the ruins on the coast of Antiochia Ad Cragum Ancient City, and you can reach them by passing through the ancient city. It was believed that a ruler named Antiochos I entered the sea here in the Ancient Period, which caused the region to be called 'King's Bay'. It is also known as the Hole in the Sea due to the fantastic looking huge hole rock in the middle of the bay. You can go down to the bays via a steep and quite arduous dirt path. The area is surrounded by banana and mango gardens.
The remains of the ancient city of Antiochia ad Cragum are located within the confines of the modern Turkish village of Güney, located approximately 12 kilometers SW of the town of Gazipaşa in the district of Antalya on the south coast. The site is extensive, encompassing an area of approximately three hectares. There still stand substantial remains of baths, a market, a colonnaded street with gateway, a large early Christian basilica, monumental tombs, and a temple, along with several unidentified structures. Antiochia is mentioned by several ancient sources as an important Roman commercial center and during the Byzantine era the city was a seat of a Christian bishopric.
The Antiochia ad Cragum Archaeological Research Project has been conducting excavations at the site since 2004. Students, professors and volunteers from all over the United States, Canada, and Australia worked in partnership with Turkish universities and archaeology students. An ancient wine press, one of the largest Roman mosaic found in Turkey and several latrine mosaics were discovered at this site.
